Coffee fiend, red wine lover or simply the quest for a Love Island-ready smile... whatever your reason for teeth whitening, there's a ton of at-home solutions ready and waiting to brighten up your smile. Although not as effective as a professional treatment, a DIY whitening kit or toothpaste can really can make a big difference when it comes to removing stains and brightening teeth – and all from the comfort of your home, too.

To help you on your search, over 596 women tested every kind of DIY kit, strips, mouth guard and new teeth whitening tool on the market – the most high-tech of which includes LED lights to speed up the treatment time!

Plus, this Amazon Prime Day, some of our favourite teeth whitening kits and toothpastes have major discounts – up to 51%! Below, we've rounded up everything you need to know if you're thinking about giving at-home teeth whitening a whirl, plus the best deals to be had.

How does charcoal whiten teeth?

Some of the formulas we’ve included contain activated charcoal. This much-talked-about ingredient is mildly abrasive and can help to remove surface stains. However, it’s certainly not the only ingredient to look out for when making your selection. Other bleaching ingredients include the active ingredient carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide, which can go one step further by penetrating the enamel.

Is my diet affecting my teeth?

Red wine, black coffee, tea, balsamic vinegar — these things can all contribute to stubborn stains, so they're best to avoid if you can, particularly while undergoing a DIY treatment. Even if these never pass your lips, highly pigmented food such as berries and tomatoes could also be to blame.

Can everyone use a teeth whitening kit?

Breastfeeding or pregnant? It’s not advisable to use a teeth whitening kit, although a tooth whitening toothpaste should be perfectly safe. They also don’t work on veneers and crowns, and should be avoided if you have particularly sensitive teeth or are under 18 years old. If in doubt, check with your dentist.

How we test

We recruited over 596 women to try some of the top teeth whitening products out there. Each tester visited the Women's Health Lab to have before and after pictures taken of their teeth, using our VISIA Complexion analyser.

Using a whiteness scale, we were then able to determine any difference in shade at the end of the trial period.

We also asked the testers to assess the whitening product at home, reviewing how easy each one was to use, how long it took, its effectiveness, and whether there was any sensitivity.

These are the best whitening products to try – no visit to the dentist required.
