I bet when you think of California agriculture, you don’t automatically think of apples. While the weather in the Pacific Northwest favors apple production, the climate in upper Northern California is ideal for a few apple varieties too! The apple harvest window can be small, so make sure you start looking for apples labeled Ca Grown and buy up as many as you can.

What is a Fried Apple Ring?

A Fried Apple Ring looks and cooks just like an onion ring, but tucked inside is a soft, sweet apple. They are perfect as an after-school snack for the kids or a fun weekend dessert with friends. I made a caramel dipping sauce that took it over the top, but feel free to dip into chocolate or just eat plain, sprinkled with powdered sugar.

How to pick the perfect apples for Fried Apple Rings!

Check theapple’sfirmness:Pickup theappleand feel the fruit’s skin. You can even gently press a small area of the skin to make sure it’s firm to the touch. Avoidapples that are noticeably soft, mushy, or indent easily after you press the skin

Slice the apples.

No rocket science here, simply slice the Granny Smith apples into 1/4 inch thick rounds with a sharp knife or a mandolin slicer.

Remove the core from the apple slices.

Use a small round cookie cutter or a small knife to remove the core and seeds from the apple slices.

Time to batter up!

Follow the directions in the recipe card below to make the Fried Apple Rings batter then get to dunking the prepared apple slices into the batter to completely coat.

It’s hot tub time for the battered apples!

Now dunk those battered apple rings right into a bubbling hot tub of cooking oil like vegetable, Grapeseed, or peanut oil and fry a few minutes per side until golden brown.

While we use olive oil in most of our recipes it is important to use an oil with a high smoke point for this recipe or your kitchen will fill with smoke from the oil before you even start frying.

Sprinkle on powdered sugar!

When the apple rings are nice and hot sprinkle them with powdered sugar and serve!

Seriously, these are so good! I dipped mine in a homemade caramel sauce, but they are delicious all on their own too. What a fabulous treat to welcome in fall, especially using delicious California grown apples!

Equipment

  • Deep skillet or deep fryer

  • thermometer

Ingredients

FOR BATTER

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 Tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 3 granny smith apples
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar for dusting
  • high temp oil for frying like vegetable oil, Grapeseed, or peanut oil.

Instructions

  • Heat up vegetable oil in a deep fryer or deep sided pan over medium high until the temperature reaches 375°F.

  • Combine all the batter dry ingredients in a medium bowl.

  • Make a well in the dry ingredients. Add the buttermilk and egg. With a fork, whisk the milk and egg and then incorporate all into the dry ingredients.

  • If batter seems too think, add a few dashes of regular milk to thin it out.

  • Slice the apples into 1/4 inch rings. Remove the core with a small cookie cutter.

  • Dip the apple slices into the prepared batter and place into hot oil.

  • Fry on both sides for a few minutes until golden.

  • Remove from oil and allow to drain on a paper towel.

  • Dust with powdered sugar to serve.
