What are the Health Benefits of a Spinach Smoothie?

Are you curious as to why you should add spinach to your smoothies?

Spinach is high in vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium, folic acid, iron, potassium, and magnesium.

It's also high in antioxidants, which may protect against oxidative stress and damage.

Spinach contains a high concentration of nitrates, which may assist in temporarily decreasing blood pressure and supporting heart health.

What Type of Spinach Should I Use?

For this Spinach Smoothie recipe, I've usedthe baby spinachvariety because the leaves are soft, don't needextra prepwork, and aren't too bitter either.

I personallydon't recommend using frozen spinach because it makes the dish taste more bitter and gives it a noticeable spinach flavor that some people may not like.

You can use regular, fresh spinach as well but remove the stems before using it.

Can You Put Raw Spinach in a Smoothie?

Yes, absolutely! You can use raw spinach in smoothies, and that’s for it’s recommended you use them.

Since we don’t cook spinach, it still retains all of its nutrition value, and this way it’s going to be the healthiest it possibly can be in the smoothie!

I recommend having some spinach on hand in the fridge to use whenever you want to make a delicious spinach smoothie!

Can I Use Frozen Spinach for Smoothie?

I don’t recommend using frozen spinach because the taste can be a bit bitter. But if that’s all you have, you can use it but balance out the flavor with the help of some strawberries in this spinach smoothie recipe.

What You Need to Make This Spinach Smoothie Recipe at Home

Making this delicious healthy spinach smoothie recipe at home is super easy. All you need are some basic ingredients to make the tastiest spinach smoothie ever.

Here’s what you’ll need to make this spinach smoothie at home:

Spinach:This is definitely the star ingredient of this smoothie! It has vitamins and minerals that I mentioned above and is incredibly good for you. It gives a beautiful green color to the smoothie and adds a ton of health benefits simultaneously.

Strawberries: Strawberries are such a healthy fruit. They’re packed with nutrition, and antioxidants like vitamin c and add a beautiful flavor to the smoothie.

Avocados:They contain high levels of healthy and beneficial fats, which can help keep you feeling fuller between meals.

Milk: You can go with your milk of choice or go for some almond or cashew milk to make this smoothie. Feel free to go for any other dairy-free milk you like, such as coconut milk. Adding milk helps thin out the smoothie as the avocado makes this drink thick and creamy.

Yogurt: We’ll be adding some yogurt to this smoothie as it increases the nutritional value, thanks to the probiotics and calcium. I recommend going for Greek yogurt or dairy-free yogurt.

Honey or maple syrup (optional): This is a great way to add some more sweetness to your smoothie, but sometimes I skip this ingredient. Apart from honey or maple syrup, you can go for any other sweetener you prefer more, or feel free to skip it altogether.

Chia seeds: I love adding chia seeds to my smoothie because of just how good they are! They contain large amounts offiber and omega-3 fatty acids, plenty of high-quality protein, and several essential minerals and antioxidants. I highly recommend not skipping this one in your smoothie!

Other Greens and Fruits You Can Add to Spinach Smoothie

This recipe is absolutely delicious as is, but if you’re looking to change things up here are some other greens and fruits you can include in your spinach smoothie:

Fruits: You can add a bunch of different fruits and berries apart from strawberries. Some great options include bananas, mangoes, and blueberries. If you don’t have fresh fruits at hand, you can also go for frozen fruit instead.

Greens: There are a bunch of different greens you can add to your smoothie along with spinach. Some great ideas include kale, Swiss chard, romaine lettuce, beet greens, carrot tops, and celery.

Protein: Want some extra protein in your smoothie? Add a scoop of protein powder to it! Vanilla protein powder goes really well with this spinach smoothie.

Extras: You can also throw in some ground flax seeds or a scoop of natural almond butter or peanut butter to add more nutrition to your smoothies.

How to Store Spinach Smoothie

For maximum freshness, it’s best to have your smoothie within 24 hours of making it. Store it in the fridge till you’re ready to have it.

You can also freeze your smoothies in a Ziploc bag for up to 7 days. You could technically freeze it for 3 months but unless it's vacuum sealed, it won’t preserve the nutrients as well.
