Brewers season preview 2022: What we learned about every player on the 40-man roster during spring training
PHOENIX — With an abbreviated spring training, the Brewers showed up ready. Most notably, their pitchers arrived looking as if everything was right on schedule. That was great news for a team with high expectations when the season starts Thursday.
Unlike the splashy moves made elsewhere during the offseason, the Brewers made only a few under-the-radar adjustments to a team that won the NL Central last season. So getting further than a first-round exit this season will hinge largely on familiar faces reaching new heights in 2022.
Based on the clues from spring training — with help from conversations from scouts, plus our own observations — here’s a look at the players the Brewers will count on this season and their outlook for potential breakouts, bounce-backs and pitfalls.

White Sox' Yoán Moncada expected to miss 3 weeks
White Sox' Yoán Moncada is expected to miss three weeks, per general manager Rick Hahn. He was scratched from the team’s final spring game with a right oblique strain, but Tony La Russa said he could have played through it.
Hahn said Moncada is still claiming he could play through it, but feels discomfort when he sneezes or laughs, which doesn’t bode well for swinging with it. Jake Burger has been called up from Triple A and will start at third base and bat ninth on Opening Day.

On the contract length for Ke'Bryan Hayes
Ke’Bryan Hayes would have been eligible for free agency entering age 30 season. He will give up three guaranteed free agent years and potential fourth in the deal with the Pirates. He will not be eligible for free agency until entering age 34 season if team exercises option for ninth year.

Pirates season preview 2022: How many bingos will this team produce?
When I was a wee lad growing up in Pittsburgh, it was mostly my mum and grandma who took me to Pirates games. They liked to get discounted tickets when the team ran its “Ladies Day” promotions. Why baseball? My grandmother, a practical and sentimental woman, had a thing for Ralph Kiner back in the day and remained a Pirates fan even after the slugger was traded to the Cubs in 1953.
Maybe the only thing that could tempt my grandma to pass up a Ladies Day game was if there was a bingo on the same day at our church or the local fire station. I tagged along to a lot of bingos, too.
When I sat down a few days ago to write the 2022 Pirates season preview, I got to thinking about those ballgame and bingo days of my youth in the 1970s. The Pirates were a much different team then. They were the Lumber Company, brimming with talent and swagger.
Maybe it was nostalgia that prompted me to produce a different kind of season preview this year, an intersection of the Buccos and bingo. The bingo card below contains 24 events that might happen as the season unfolds, along with my explanations.
On Ke'Bryan Hayes' raw power
A quick note on Ke'Bryan Hayes' raw power, since tapping into that and turning more doubles into homers will be the biggest key for him going forward: He hit a single ball harder last season than almost two-thirds of the league managed. When he hit a ball over 111 mph last year, that was harder than any ball hit by Justin Turner, Marcus Semien or Kris Bryant did in 2021. Now he just needs to do it consistently.

BRADENTON, Fla. — The first person to tap the brakes on the Ke’Bryan Hayes hype machine was none other than Hayes himself.
“I’ve only played 24 games in the major leagues,” Hayes said on Tuesday. “This year, we’re going to play 162. There’s gonna be a lot of ups, a lot of downs. I’ll get to play (against) a bunch of teams across the league, and I’m excited for that. Yeah, I feel like I still have a lot to prove.”
That’s all true, but it doesn’t diminish Hayes’ fabulous first impression.

At long last, the Pirates have landed an extension. It is the largest contract handed out in franchise history. For Hayes, it’s a big payday and a commitment to be part of the Pirates’ present and future. For the Pirates, it’s locking in what I think will look like a massively team-friendly deal by the end of it. Their last core relied heavily on pre-arbitration extensions — Andrew McCutchen, Starling Marte, Gregory Polanco, et al — and the Pirates have tried for multiple years now to sign Hayes and Bryan Reynolds long-term. Hayes, 25, is a Gold Glove-caliber third baseman who has shown flashes of being an exceptional hitter, but he’s coming off of an injury-shortened campaign in which he batted .257/.316/.373.
