Overview
What's New
The 2023 Audi Q3 gains standard signature LED headlights and updated wheels designs. An available phone charging pad replaces last year's charging box. One of Audi's top sellers, the current Q3 debuted in 2019.
Choosing Your Audi Q3
The Audi Q3 continues in two trim levels: Premium and Premium Plus. The Premium starts at $37,495 including destination, and the Premium Plus is priced from $40,795.
Engine Choices
Every Q3 carries a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. A high-output version is available on both trims for $2,300. All-wheel drive and eight-speed automatic transmission are standard across the board.
Engine Type | Horsepower | Torque | Fuel Economy (Combined) |
2.0L Turbo 4-Cylinder | 181 hp | 221 lb-ft | 26 mpg |
2.0L Turbo 4-Cylinder | 228 hp | 258 lb-ft | 24 mpg |
Passenger and Cargo Capacity
The Q3 is Audi's smallest crossover but can carry five people in relative comfort. The Q3's small size is more apparent when it comes to carrying things. There are 23.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat and 48 cubic feet with it folded. Some hatchbacks can hold more.
Safety Features
The Q3 offers plenty of standard driver assistance technology. Every model gets automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors. Upgrading to the Premium Plus brings adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and surround-view cameras. Rear side airbags are available on both trims for $350.
Connectivity
The standard infotainment systems for both trims provide an 8.8-inch touchscreen, 10 speakers, four USB ports, satellite radio, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Exclusive to the Premium Plus, the $2,700 Technology Package adds navigation, wireless phone charging, a 10.1-inch touchscreen, traffic sign recognition, and 15-speaker SONOS surround sound.
2023 Audi Q3 Premium – MSRP From $37,495
The Premium packs a lot of equipment for the price, including leather upholstery, a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, heated eight-way power front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a power liftgate, aluminum roof rails, adaptive LED headlights, and 18-inch alloy wheels.
The $1,400 Convenience Package tacks on driver memory settings, a hands-free power liftgate, power-folding side mirrors, LED interior lighting, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a motion-sensing alarm. For a different look outside, the $1,300 Black Optic furnishes black roof rails, gloss black exterior trim, and 19-inch graphite-finish wheels. Wood interior trim is available for $250.
2023 Audi Q3 Premium Plus – MSRP From $40,795
The Convenience Package features are standard on the Premium Plus, along with the aforementioned safety upgrades. Models equipped with the Technology Package get a 12.3-inch instrument display. The Black Optic treatment and wood interior trim remain optional.

CarsDirect Tip
The 2023 Audi Q3 in Premium trim lacks nothing we expect in an entry-level luxury crossover. The main reason for upgrading to the Premium Plus is access to the Technology Package, though it's not exactly a bargain. With either trim, the base engine performs well enough that the $2,300 for the high-out version is better spent elsewhere in your build.

Our expert ratings are based on seven comprehensive criteria: quality, safety, comfort, performance, fuel economy, reliability history and value.
You can interpret our ratings in the following way:
: Outstanding vehicle. Only the most exceptional vehicles achieve this rating.
: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.
: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.
: Below average vehicle. Not recommended, and lacking attributes a car buyer would come to expect for the price.
: Poor vehicle. Simply does not deserve to be on the road.

What have we here, then? Audi has five Q-cars in its current lineup – effectively SUV versions of existing sedans or hatchbacks. The Q3 is the smallest of these, resembling an A3 that’s been jacked up for reasons which aren’t entirely clear. The A3 is a fine car in its own right, and it’s hard to think of any area where the Q3 outperforms its sibling. It’s no cheaper to buy or run, with inferior fuel economy maxing out at 24 mpg combined – no better than you’d find in Audi’s larger Q5 model.
The Q5 is also far better at transporting people than the Q3, which is effectively only a four-seater. Even then, it feels cramped – the driver is likely to find their right leg squashed against the center console, while the footrest demands an awkward contortion of the left leg to reach it. The seat itself isn’t especially comfortable unless you upgrade to the optional eight-way powered variants – without it, there’s insufficient bolstering and adjustment. Two people can sit in the back reasonably comfortably thanks to 36.1 inches of legroom, but three abreast would be a real squash. Even the trunk is compromised, by an unexpected gap between the floor and the rear seat backs, which can easily swallow up loose tins or small objects.
A mixed picture inside. So far, we’ve established that the Q3 isn’t especially spacious or practical. In terms of style and substance, it’s also flawed. You don’t have to be a Volkswagen obsessive to notice dashboard components that have been repurposed from the VW Group parts bin, while swathes of cheap black plastic do little to raise the cabin ambiance. It looks better in photos than it does in the metal (or plastic), featuring a monochrome color palette rivals have long since moved away from.
At least there’s generous small-item storage for the paraphernalia of modern life around the interior, while the rear seat slides to offer a little extra cargo storage when necessary. By default, there are over 18 cubic feet of space back here, which is good by class standards. The tailgate opens to reveal a clear opening and a flat load bay, making it easy to get items in and out, and the back seat folds in a practical 40/20/40 format to accommodate lengthy items.
Good equipment levels. We have to acknowledge a generous level of standard-fit equipment across the Q3 range. Go for the Premium model, and you get a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8.8-inch touchscreen, blind spot monitoring, heated leather front seats, and a panoramic sunroof. New for 2023 are wireless phone charging and LED headlights. Premium Plus builds on this with adaptive cruise and surround-view cameras, while a further $2,700 options package combines Audi’s acclaimed virtual co*ckpit with a Sonos audio system.
Premium Plus models are fitted with the larger of the Q3’s two takes on a two-liter turbocharged engine. The 40 variant is underwhelming with its 184 horses, so it’s advisable to upgrade to the 228 hp 45 version. Not only does this knock a second off the 0-60 sprint, it feels significantly more responsive. Both engines are smooth and quiet, though the suspension betrays the car’s bulk by sending jolts through to the interior. The eight-speed automatic transmission gearbox combines well with the standard all-wheel drive for grip even in poor conditions, but don’t expect much driving pleasure, since the steering is as numb as we’ve come to expect from Audi. On a brighter note, it’s brilliant for low-speed maneuvers, with a tight turning circle simplifying car parks.
A price to be paid. The Q3 range starts at $37,995 for the 40 Premium and $41,295 for a 40 Premium Plus, while the 45 Premium is slightly cheaper than the latter. Only Premium Plus trims offer the high-end options packages which add considerably to the Q3’s appeal, but by then the price is nudging $50,000. That’s Acura MDX territory, which brings a lot more metal for your buck. Q3 running costs are also on the high side – you’ll struggle to better 24 mpg combined, while the four-year warranty doesn’t include scheduled maintenance.
Final thoughts. What’s the point of the Q3? Studying it dispassionately, it’s hard to think of anything it does especially well, or identify any unique selling points. It’s an also-ran in the fiercely competitive small SUV market, but it’s also one of the weakest models in Audi’s current range. The Q5 is far better at transporting people and the A3 is cheaper and better to drive, while the Mercedes-Benz GLC is more stylish and Volvo’s XC60 runs rings around the Q3 in terms of its interior.
If you find yourself irresistibly drawn to the Q3, you’re not getting a bad car by any means. It’s well assembled, spacious for four adults, and good at swallowing cargo. The cheapest Premium model is generously equipped and its infotainment screen is pin-sharp, though its 4,000-pound body means the 40 engine can feel underpowered once you’re fully loaded. It also has a literal and metaphorical impact on ride quality, meaning this isn’t the most comfortable SUV across bridge joins and uneven asphalt, especially since the standard front seats are already lacking in comfort.
